ABC6 WeatherLab – Summer Solstice

With the season of Summer right around the corner, it’s a good time to take a celestial view of the Summer Solstice. Remember that the Earth’s orbit around the sun takes one year, and every three months the season changes. This is true in both the northern and southern hemispheres. In its yearly elliptical orbit around the sun, the Earth is actually CLOSER to the sun on the first day of Winter than it is on the first day of Summer. This tells us that the Earth’s tilt is far more relevant to the changing of the seasons than is the distance between the sun and Earth.
