Airport officials are gearing up for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. That includes getting the word out about what kinds of items travelers should leave at home.

Nearly 700 items have been seized at T.F. Green Airport in the past month alone. TSA is advising holiday travelers to be aware of what they’re packing in their suitcases to avoid contributing to that number.

"We do see during the holiday season less of that frequent flier group so we’re really trying to get the message out to folks about what they can and cannot fly with,” said TSA Spokesman Michael McCarthy.

Many travelers are packing gifts but it’s important to know which of those gifts won’t make it through security.

"Items here like replica firearms or even wood-working tools those items are not allowed in your carry-on luggage,” McCarthy said.

One common mistake this time of year is wrapping gifts before getting on a plane.

"You can fly with a wrapped present but we really advise against it. My best advice is wrap it when you get to your destination or if you really have to wrap it ahead of time a gift bag is a better bet,” said McCarthy.

But when it comes to your favorite holiday dish, TSA says there’s no need to leave it at home.

"You can bring your food. As long as it adheres to the liquid restrictions the food is fine,” said McCarthy.

Due to tightened security, TSA is advising travelers to give themselves more time than usual.
