PROVIDENCE – The Providence 49ers are ready for the biggest game of their young careers.
"We’re ready, 100 percent,” said the team’s Vice President, Ronald Scott.
The boys took to the field Friday night, practicing for their game against New Britain, Connecticut, for the title of New England Regional champs. "They’re physical just like us, they’re fast just like us, but I think we’re going to beat them,” said Scott.
The 49ers are undefeated, 13-0.
"We’ve been turning out to be really good this year,” the team captain, Xavier ‘Moose’ Luke, said. And if they win Regionals, Luke joked, “I’m going to go to my school bragging."
But in addition to bragging rights, they get to attend Nationals in Orlando, Florida. It would be a first time for many players. The coaches told ABC6 News that most of the team had never even left Providence, before their recent away game in New Hampshire.
"It’’s a big deal for them. It’ll actually be my first time going to Florida as well,” Scott said.
Parents are also excited and incredibly proud.
"Its been an experience to see them go so far. And they’re so young,” one parent exclaimed. "I’m so proud. I’m so proud of all of the boys, not just my son,” added another mother.
Head coach, Jose Lugo, said their success is due to their team philosophy, which is about always moving forward. He added they’re also successful because they work hard, on and off the field.
"We’re preparing the kids to be better players, but most of all, we’re preparing them to be better young men."
