Marchin Hat Trick Leads Brown Hockey Past Colgate In Friendship Four Semifinal

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Rookie Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) recorded his first career hat trick and Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) posted a shutout to lead the Brown men’s hockey team past Colgate, 5-0, in the opening semifinal matchup of the inaugural Friendship Four Friday afternoon at SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Brown (2-4-2, 2-3-2) will face UMass Lowell in championship game after the River Hawks downed Northeastern in overtime, 3-2, in the other semifinal. Colgate moves to 4-9-1 and 1-5-1.

Marchin scored all three goals in the second period and combined with seniors Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) and Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) for a 10-point performance by the top line. Naclerio had one goal and two assists, while Lappin had four assists. Sophomore Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) also added a power play goal and Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) had two assists.

Ernst had 14 shots for his third career shutout, while Charlie Finn stopped 19 shots on the other end.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, as Brown held a slim edge in shots, 8-6.

Brown broke through in the second period with a pair of goals in the opening six minutes, starting with Marchin’s third tally of the season at 3:56. Nick Lappin received the pass from Naclerio, pulled the puck back from behind the goal line and found Marchin in front for the easy finish.  

After Naclerio notched his third of the season at 6:00, Marchin tacked on his second of the game at 12:53, finishing a feed from Naclerio for the three-goal advantage. Marchin completed the hat trick at 16:47 as he set up in front of the crease and tipped in a pass from Gottlieb for the 4-0 lead at the second intermission.

Brown outshot the Raiders by an 11-3 margin in the second period.

The Bears continued their solid play early during the third stanza, when Bird scored on power play at 1:37. Fellow sophomore Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) sent a centering pass from the right circle and Bird knocked home the one-timer to make it a five-goal victory.

The Bears outshot the Raiders, 24-14.
