Speaker Shekarchi rules out potential congressional run

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi has officially released a statement ruling out a potential congressional run for 2022.

A statement was released by Shekarchi on Thursday, reading in part: “Although I am humbled that Congressman Langevin and many others have mentioned me as a potential Congressional candidate, I love serving as Speaker and representing my Warwick constituents at the State House. I have no intention of seeking the Congressional seat this year.”

This statement comes days after Congressman Jim Langevin announced he would not seek re-election in the fall- later adding Shekarchi would make a strong candidate for the position.
