A Pawtucket man is in critical condition following an accident in Connecticut Friday morning.

52 year old John Martins was injured after the heavy duty wrecker he was driving blew a tire, veered off the roadway to the left, struck the bridge parapet on I-95 North in North Stonington and traveled 1,000 feet down the embankment striking a tree on September 4th at 9:46 a.m.

Good Samaritans pulled Martins out of the burning wrecker shortly before the vehicle became engulfed in flames. He was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital.

500 feet of rope metal guardrail was damaged and I-95 South was closed for one hour. I-95 North was closed for three hours.

Connecticut State Police thank Craig Johnson, of New London, Leticia Orozco, of East Lyme, Gerard Richardson, of New Jersey, Sherry Balcher, of Westbrook, Mathew Easton, of New Jersey, Jamie Thomas, of Colorado, and Abernathy Brown, of New Jersey for their courage and bravery in saving Martins’ life.
