WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ The Warwick Fire Department has been awarded nearly $1 million in federal funding for search and rescue training programs.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant will cover the costs of training the Warwick firefighters on specific emergency response techniques, including rescuing people who’ve become trapped underneath rubble in the case of a building collapse.
The city of Warwick currently has a number of large-scale construction projects in the works.
Rhode Island’s congressional delegation, which helped secure the funds, says it’s important to make sure fire departments have the equipment and training they need.
AFG is a competitive grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA.
