URI awarded grant to create writing program for sciences

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) _ The University of Rhode Island has been awarded $500,000 to create a writing program for graduate students in the sciences.         

The school says writing workshops and classes will start in September, with a Graduate Science Writing Center opening later in the year.
        
Writing Professor Nedra Reynolds, who helped write the grant, says public policy based on science requires clear, effective writing that the public can understand.         

Reynolds is one of many professors in URI’s Harrington School of Communication and Media who will teach writing courses and run workshops. 

Professors in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences will also teach courses in the program.
        
The competitive grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation.
