A Providence woman was shot and killed in what police are calling a murder-suicide.

Officials say the woman’s ex-boyfriend pulled the trigger before turning the gun on himself.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, but say the man left behind a note at the crime scene.

Over the weekend, shots were fired inside Dexter Manor on Broad Street, a housing complex for the elderly and disabled.

"People said they heard some noises, but they weren’t sure if it was shots fired," said Walter Clark, a Providence resident.

On Sunday afternoon a man and a woman, both in their 30’s, were found dead inside the apartment with gunshot wounds, according to Providence Police Major David Lapatin.

"I heard that the guy shot the woman and then went into the bedroom and shot himself," said William Garcia, of Providence.

Residents living at Dexter Manor identify the woman as 32-year-old Arien Daly. Police say she and the man had broken up about six months ago, but aren’t sure why she was back at his home to begin with.

The note was found near their bodies at the scene, but police are not releasing what the note said.

Police are now checking to see if the former couple had a history of domestic violence.

"This is a very unfortunate incident that is so hard to prevent and we are dealing with it now and we are dealing with the families and hopefully we will conclude this soon," said Major Lapatin.

A shot gun was used in the murder-suicide and at this point, police are not sure who actually owned the gun, which is now in the custody of investigators.
