PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The shadow of failed video game company 38 Studios comes up repeatedly as the owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox make their pitch to build a stadium in Providence.

The PawSox says it’s unfair to compare the two projects. But the public and some lawmakers are now wary of deals involving private companies and public resources.

Political analysts say it will take time for voters to get over 38 Studios, which left taxpayers on the hook for as much as $100 million.

The PawSox say the proposed stadium would offer tangible benefits to the public, including jobs and economic growth.

The team’s original proposal seeking $120 million in subsidies was met with strenuous public opposition.

A new deal is being negotiated by the team and state officials but has yet to be revealed.
