PROVIDENCE, R.I.: Berta Hudson 48, was shot and killed by her estranged husband Oscar Hudson, 50, on Saturday afternoon, according to police. A restraining order filed by Berta in February, describes her living in fear of Oscar.
A Family Court judge granted Berta the restraining order, which Oscar later violated.
In the affidavit, Berta said, “I am filing against my soon to be ex because he is abusive. On Friday 2/1, I went to my local DV (Domestic Violence) center to seek advice.”
Oscar killed Berta on Charles St. in Providence outside of a relative’s home, before killing himself, according to police. Berta previously described being stalked by Oscar in her affidavit.
“He has a tracker on my car and moved 3 houses down from me,” she said. “He has shown up at places I have been such as the supermarket. He calls me all the time randomly. He is very manipulative and his anger is escalating.”
According to court documents, Oscar violated the protective order in April. In July, he was found guilty by the District Court, with conditions including 1-year filing, domestic abuse counseling, and another domestic contact order.
Oscar appealed to Superior Court and had a pre-trial conference scheduled in September.
Police still have not confirmed whether Oscar’s gun was owned legally.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Berta Hudson. It says all money will be used to cover funeral expenses.
The Rhode Island Coalition for Domestic Violence says they have many resources for victims including counseling, and emergency shelters. If you need help you can call their 24-hour hotline: 1-800-494-800.
