DLT: As many as 800 SSN’s exposed

By News Staff
The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training says a malfunction in a mail-sorting machine caused the Social Security Numbers more than 800 customers to become exposed.
DLT announced Monday that as many as 832 Unemployment Insurance customers had paperwork including their full or partial SSN mailed accidentally to either companies that they did not work for or to other DLT customers.
The malfunction happened during the week of June22-26. DLT says it knows of 18 customers whose full SSN were sent to the wrong employers.
“DLT regrets this error. It was not the result of an IT security breach. It was a mechanical error,” read a release from DLT. “As soon as it detected the problem, DLT had the mail machine serviced and repaired.”
DLT says it is offering free credit monitoring services for one year to all affected customers.
