Coventry Police cruiser struck in car accident

By News Staff
West Warwick Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a Coventry Police cruiser.
Police responded to the accident just after midnight Tuesday morning on Wakefield Street.
A car driven by a 79-year-old man struck the cruiser that was in route to the ACI with a prisoner.
The car struck the cruiser’s front driver’s side and kept driving on Wakefield Street without stopping. Officers located the suspect’s car not far from the scene and sent the driver to the hospital as it appears he was suffering a medical issue at the time.
The Coventry officer was also sent to the hospital but later released. The prisoner being transported to the ACI was uninjured. A pedestrian walking in the area at the time suffered minor injuries to his leg from debris.
Initial investigation reveals that speed and alcohol were not factors, but police are continuing to look into the accident.
