Martinson, Nelson Power Chiefs Past PawSox On Independence Day

Pawtucket Red Sox Press Release

(Syracuse, NY) – Jason Martinson and Chris Nelson combined for three homers and nine RBIs to power the Syracuse Chiefs to a 12-4 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox in front of a crowd of 12,526 on Independence Day at NBT Bank Stadium. After the PawSox twice took leads on a pair of Carlos Peguero home runs, the Chiefs erupted for nine unanswered runs and sent Pawtucket to its seventh consecutive loss.

Peguero put the PawSox ahead in the top of the first inning with his fifth homer, a massive blast to right.  After the Chiefs plated three runs off of Pawtucket starter Keith Couch in the first two innings, Peguero struck again in the third.

After singles from Mike Miller and Jackie Bradley, Jr., Peguero left the yard for the second time and pushed the Sox ahead 4-3.

Martinson put the Chiefs ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth.  After Caleb Ramsey laced the second of his four hits, Nelson hit drove a ball over the wall in left to make it a 5-4 game.

The Chiefs piled on in the sixth and seventh innings.  Couch hit Mario Lisson to open the inning and was tagged for singles by Ramsey and Nelson – the last of which made it 6-4 – before he was lifted.  Jess Todd yielded a sacrifice fly to Darin Mastrioanni and a base hit to Trea Turner which put Chiefs at the corners.

Martinson then hit his second homer, a towering drive to left that sent the Chiefs to a 10-4 advantage.  All told, Couch allowed ten hits and eight runs over five innings; he struck out six and walked none.

Pat Light came in to pitch the seventh but had difficulty finding the strike zone.  After retiring Ricky Hague to open the inning, Light allowed hits to Lisson and Ramsey.  He then surrendered a sacrifice fly to Nelson that pushed Syracuse to an 11-4 lead.

Light then walked three straight, the last of which plated the game’s final run and gave the Chiefs an eight-run margin.  Jonathan Aro struck out Martinson to end the inning.

The PawSox continue the series on Sunday night at 5:05 P.M. with Henry Owens (2-6, 3.28) on the mound; he will be opposed by Syracuse right-hander Taylor Jordan (2-4, 2.97).  Radio coverage on WHJJ and online will begin at 4:50.
