Police are investigating after a man was found dead and another injured in Providence following two shootings early Monday morning. This is the city’s seventh homicide this year.

Major David Lapatin says they received a call about an accident at 1 a.m. on Canal Street near Rodger Williams Memorial Park where two vehicles were pursuing each other and shots were fired before they crashed.

Upon arrival, officers found 27-year-old Joao Dos Santos, of Pawtucket, shot and killed on the sidewalk at Canal and Smith Streets. Lapatin says it appeared Dos Santos was trying to flee and drove the wrong way down a side street before crashing.

About 30 minutes later, officers were called to another shooting on Nebraska Street, where 23-year-old Dimitri Perry, of Providence, was found shot. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officials say both shootings are believed to be unrelated but do think in each case the victim’s were targeted. They say there is not threat to the public.
