Elorza pushes fire platoon changes back to August 1

By News Staff
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has pushed the fire department three platoon schedule deadline back one month.
After negotiations with IAFF Local 799 over the effects of the city’s reorganization into a three platoon system, an agreement still had not been reached as of the previous July 1 deadline.
The city will now implement the schedule on August 1 unless a different agreement is reached.
Last month, Mayor Elorza and the firefighters union went to court over scheduling changes after the Mayor wanted to save money by getting rid of a shift and requiring firefighters to work, on average, 14 more hours each week.
Opponents have said that he went about it the wrong way and that downsizing could pose a serious safety concern.
