How it Happened
Tim Caputo got things started in the bottom of the first, sending a leadoff double down the third base line before crossing the plate on a single to left by Chris Hess. Martin Taveras followed with a double that plated Hess and gave the Rams a 2-0 advantage.
Rhode Island (19-19-1, 11-6) then made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Hess scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick DeRegis.
George Washington (28-15, 12-7) cut into the lead in the top of the sixth as Robbie Metz scored on a two-out double by Kevin Mahala to make it 3-1. Colin Gibbons-Fly then sent a three-run shot out of the park to give the Colonials a 4-3 advantage.
Rhody threatened in the bottom of the frame with DeRegis singling to left to lead off the inning and advancing to third on a base hit by Connor Foreman. However, that was as close as the Rams would get as DeRegis was stranded at third and URI managed to send just 10 men to the plate over the three innings that followed.
What it Means
Despite falling to the Colonials, the Rams maintain a share of first place in the Atlantic statndings as Richmond’s conference record dropped to 11-7 after a loss at UMass and Fordham & Saint Louis improved to 11-6 in the A-10 with wins over St. Bonaventure and VCU, respectively.
Inside the Box Score
- Each of Rhody’s starters reached base at least once, with seven different players combining for 11 hits to GW’s 10.
- Sophomore Martin Taveras led all players with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He also drove in a run and extended his hit streak to 10 consecutive games. It is his second 10-game hit streak of the season.
- Redshirt freshman Chris Hess was 2-for-4 on the day and had a hand in each of Rhode Island’s three runs as he scored twice and drove one in.
- Senior Tim Caputo also had a pair of hits with one run scored, one putout and three assists in the field.
- Senior Nick DeRegis extended his hit streak to a season-best nine games with his sixth-inning single. He also drove in a run on a third-inning sacrifice fly.
- Freshman Tyler Wilson (6-1) was charged with the loss – his first of the season – as he gave up four runs on nine hits over seven-plus innings. The four runs allowed ended Wilson’s streak of consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run at 28.0.
- Sophomore Taso Stathopoulos tossed the final two innings, allowing just one hit over over a pair of scoreless frames.
- GW’s Kevin Hodgson (1-1) snaked a one-out win while Eddie Muhl closed things out with a scoreless eighth and ninth for his 16th save of the season.
