PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox have said the team will leave Rhode Island if a deal can’t be reached with the state.

The team and state lawmakers are working on a deal after the team’s original proposal asking for $120 million in state subsidies was rejected with a lukewarm response from the public and lawmakers.

Boston Red Sox President and PawSox co-owner Larry Lucchino has said other New England communities have expressed interest in the team, but he has refused to say where.

Officials in Worcester and New Bedford in nearby Massachusetts say they wouldn’t use public funding for the stadium.

Meanwhile, officials in Springfield, Massachusetts, and New Britain, Connecticut, wouldn’t say if they’d approached the team.

Cities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont already have teams.
