PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Federal prosecutors have told a judge they believe it’s reasonable to sentence former House Speaker Gordon Fox to three years in prison for bribery, wire fraud and filing a false tax return, even though that’s below the sentencing guideline range.

Fox admits he took a $52,500 bribe and used $108,000 from his campaign account for himself.         In papers filed Tuesday, federal prosecutors say there are unique circumstances. The five-year statute of limitations on the bribery count has expired, but Fox agreed to waive it.

Fox’s guideline range was calculated as three years, five months to four years, three months.

Prosecutors say without the bribery charge, the range would have been 15 to 21 months.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi is scheduled to sentence Fox on Thursday.
