PAWTUCKET – A Memorial Day tribute on McCoy Stadium honoring veterans also honors the late team president, Jim Skeffington.
Players from both teams lined up on the baselines, while an announcer spoke of Skeffington’s contributions to the team and pictures of flashed on the scoreboard. PawSox players wore his initials on their right sleeves.
Dr. Charles Steinberg, executive vice president of the Boston Red Sox, described the 73 year-old attorney as a passionate baseball-lover who was really enjoying his time as the new face of the ownership group. “Those who knew him a long time said that even though he was only with the PawSox for a few months…it was maybe the best or happiest time of his life,” he explained. “The idea of united baseball and Rhode Island was a dream come true for him.”
As for what’s next for the Providence stadium proposal – that’s still up in the air. Steinberg would not speculate, but told ABC6 News the team is in good hands. “I think you’ve got all of the people that need to work together in place.”
