13-year-old struck, killed by school bus in Mansfield

Family members have identified the boy that was struck and killed by a school bus in Mansfield as 13-year-old Shane Farrell.

In a statement, the family says Farrell was a “remarkable young man who touched the lives of many people.”

The teen was struck around 2 p.m. Wednesday while riding his bicycle on East Street near the bike path. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

Thirty children were on the school bus at the time but were not injured. The kids were taken to Quaker Middle School and Mansfield High School where grief counselors were made available, according to a joint press release from Mansfield Police and School Departments.

Mansfield Police, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Reconstruction Team are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Farrell was a student at Qualter’s Middle School in Mansfield.
