A Barrington family is pushing for changes on a busy road after their dog was seriously injured in a hit and run.

It’s not the first time it’s happened in this pet-friendly neighborhood, and many are concerned a child could be next if something isn’t done.

Dan and Margaret Caine say their dog, Stella, almost didn’t make it. But after a week at a local animal hospital, she is slowly getting back to normal.

“The hospital said she was basically dead,” explained Dan.

Stella was playing in the family’s driveway on Maple Avenue in Barrington last week when she wandered off near the street. Moments later, a speeding truck hit her and didn’t look back.

“The neighbors behind us heard the sound, there’s no way the driver didn’t know they hit someone,” explained the Caine’s.

The Caine’s now want something to be done along this busy traveled road. It’s one of the main drags between middle highway and 114.

They say over the years other pets have been killed—a couple cats and they lost a dog several years ago. They’re worried a child might be next.

They are now meeting with the Town Manager and Police Chief hoping to get drivers to slow down. The Town Manager, Peter DeAngelis, agrees it’s been an ongoing problem.

“They have to live with this all the time. We are looking to get more police out there and signs,” said DeAngelis.

It’s going to be a while before Stella is strong enough to walk without a limp. In the meantime, the Caine’s just hope another pet won’t become a victim.
