SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) _ Bryant University is celebrating a $75 million expansion. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the “Bryant Builds” initiative was held Friday.

Construction on a new entrance and new facilities for the school’s 435-acre Smithfield campus begins May 18.

New buildings will include a 50,000-square-foot academic innovation center for the College of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences, an exercise center for students on the school’s 22 NCAA Division I sports teams and a 78,000-square-foot indoor athletic practice facility.

The university says the practice facility will be the only one of its kind at a private Division I school in New England.

The school says it raised more than $46 million for the campaign and received $15 million in gifts. The campaign will add more than 250,000 square feet in facilities.
