New York man arrested for drug trafficking in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Miguel Evangelista Carrasco, 31, of New York was arrested by federal and state officials on drug charges after attempting to flee on foot on Route 95.

Carrasco allegedly showed up to a Providence USPS center to claim a package, showing a Rhode Island license with his picture and the name of the person the packages were addressed to before being approached by U.S. Postal Inspection Service agents and Rhode Island State Police. A K-9 unit had previously determined the package likely contained narcotics inside.

He attempted to flee on foot, running onto Route 95 offramp, but was apprehended after falling and injuring himself on the roadway.

Police found two kilograms of cocaine wrapped up extensively inside the package.

Carrasco is charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled substance and conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.
