State senators to receive briefing on pension legislation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ State senators will be briefed about legislation that needs to be approved to finalize a deal that would resolve years of legal wrangling over Rhode Island’s landmark public pension system overhaul.
The settlement terms have to be approved by the General Assembly. The pension reform was done legislatively so the terms have to be incorporated into the law.
The governor’s office, treasurer’s office and attorneys for both sides plan to give a presentation to the Senate Thursday, shortly after the afternoon session.
The Senate is expected to reconvene after the briefing so the pension settlement legislation can be introduced.
The state has struck a deal with most of the public sector unions and retiree coalitions suing over higher retirement ages and cuts to cost-of-living increases.
