New wrong-way driving detection systems are coming online

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Transportation officials say they’re activating advanced wrong-way driving detection systems in 24 locations across the state.
The State Department of Transportation said Friday that the new warning systems that were added to highway off-ramps are coming online beginning this week.
The systems alert a driver who is traveling in the wrong direction and notify police and other motorists in the area of a potential wrong-way driver.
The new systems are part of a $1.8 million initiative to help prevent wrong-way crashes, using new signs, striping and detection systems.
The DOT says there have been 10 fatal wrong-way crashes in Rhode Island since 2008, resulting in 13 deaths.
Two people were killed earlier this month when a driver went the wrong way on Route 6 in Providence.
