A Florida man is sentenced to life in prison for sexual assault and child molestation that occurred in Warwick.
John Cavanaugh, 64, of Spring Hill, Florida has been sentenced to life in prison on April 17, for sexual assault and molestation of a girl that took place in the 1990’s.
Cavanaugh was found guilty in November 2014 of four counts of second degree child molestation and one count of first degree sexual assault. He was sentenced to life on the first degree sexual assault.
He was also sentenced to 10 years suspended with probation on top of each of the four counts of second degree child molestation.
The State proved the young girl was molested multiple times between the ages nine and fifteen in the 1990’s in Warwick when the defendant lived there at the time. The crime was reported in 2013.
Peter F. Kilmartin, the Rhode Island Attorney General said in a statement, “After years of being afraid to come forward and report the abuse, it is my sincerest hope that this sentence brings a sense of justice for the victim. Moreover, I hope it gives others who may not have come forward to report their abusers the strength to do so knowing the police and my Office will fight to give them justice as well.”
