The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority announced Tuesday morning installation of a permanent concrete median barrier on the Newport Pell Bridge has been completed.

The construction was originally supposed to take twelve weeks but crews were able to finish the project in six weeks.

Installation of the barrier began back in March and crews finished laying down the barrier early last week.

Studies were then done to determine if the bridge was as strong as originally built, and they determined it was.

The median barrier was built to help deter crossover accident from occurring on the bridge deck.
