PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The U.S. Senate has officially congratulated the Providence College men’s ice hockey team on its first national title.

Rhode Island Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse announced Thursday that the Senate had unanimously approved their resolution commemorating the Friars’ NCAA win.

The Friars defeated Boston University 4-3 on Saturday to win the NCAA Division I Championship at the TD Garden in Boston.

The resolution recognizes the contributions of all the players, particularly Tom Parisi, Mark Jankowski and Anthony Florentino, who scored the first three goals for the team, and Brandon Tanev, who scored the goal in the third period giving the Friars the lead.

Reed and Whitehouse say the team made Rhode Islanders proud with their historic win. Whitehouse says the team “earned this victory.”
