Providence man charged in brutal sexual assault

A Providence man is accused of raping and assaulting a woman at an apartment on Valley Street.

Police says victim was found around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning beaten and barely conscious in a driveway.

They say the woman identified 26-year-old Richard Lopes as her attacker and a blood trail led to a basement apartment where Lopes was found asleep.

Police say he was covered in blood with scratches on his arm.

Police say Lopes broke a chair over the victims head during the assault. She was able to escape the apartment but only made it to the driveway.

Lopes is charged with first-degree sexual assault, felony assault, and simple assault. He was arraigned and held without bail.

The woman was taken to the hospital with severe facial injuries.
