Attorney general sues fire districts over records, meetings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin has sued the Western Coventry Fire District accusing it of violating the state Open Meetings Act. He sued the Manville Fire Department for allegedly violating the Access to Public Records Act.
Kilmartin had previously ruled that Western Coventry and Manville violated open meeting and public records rules, but determined Monday that the violations were “willful and knowing.”
Kilmartin says the Western Coventry complaint stemmed from a failure to file minutes of a September 2014 meeting in a timely manner.
The complaint against the Manville Fire Department in Lincoln stemmed from a February 2014 public-records request. The fire department asked for an extension to the 10-day deadline to respond to records requests, but never fulfilled the request.
