A Seekonk Select Board Member up for re-election owes the town thousands of dollars in back taxes.

According to town title records from the Town of Seekonk Collector‘s Office Selectman Gary Sagar owes roughly $29,000 on a commercial property on Case Ave.  The delinquency dates back to 2012.

Sagar admitted to ABC6 News that he’s behind and believes the issue is being brought up as part of a smear campaign.

“I consider it a non-issue, it’s a political issue that somebody is using obviously to try and take my reputation,” said Sagar who went on to add “Basically, it was a cash flow issue not having guaranteed income from rentals necessary.”

The town’s treasurer/collector Christine Defontes says they are working with the owner to have the taxes paid.  She adds they typically work with owners and prefer not letting the property slip into foreclosure.

Sagar was elected to the board in 2012.  Since then he’s collected a $2,100 stipend each year from the town.

“Well I consider what they pay me reimbursement for my out of pocket expenses to be a selectman,” said Sagar.

Sagar, Dave Parker, David Viera and Jeffrey Starr Mararian are all running for the two select board seats.

The election is Monday April 3, 2015.
