PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The new head of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design has been a formidable presence at the school for decades.

Rosanne Somerson arrived in 1972 as an undergraduate and went on to start a successful furniture design studio in Fall River, Massachusetts.

She co-founded the school’s furniture design department in 1995 and was chosen to lead the school in February.

The same drive that led Somerson to become renowned in her field is now directing her vision for the school.

The newly elected president said her mission is to educate the community _ and the world _ about the importance of art and design.
