Off-duty officer rescues elderly man from burning car

An off-duty Cranston Police officer is credited with pulling an elderly man from a burning car.

East Providence Police say the man crashed into a guard rail in late Tuesday night on North Hull Street.

Officer Brenton Medeiros was driving on I-195 after 11 p.m. when he saw flames rising from a car.

Police say Medeiros pulled over on the highway and climbed over the fence to help.

He then pulled the driver from the car.

The elderly man was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries were not immediately available.

The cause of the crash still under investigation.
