Raimondo unveils proposals to make college affordable

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Gina Raimondo will propose spending more than $12 million to make college affordable and help students build skills when she unveils her budget.

Raimondo is submitting her budget proposal Thursday. She says it will put job creation front and center.

She unveiled three of her education proposals Wednesday.                 

Raimondo wants to spend $10 million on scholarships, about $1.75 million to forgive student loans for young workers in science, technology, engineering and design industries in Rhode Island, and $1.3 million for students to earn college credits while in high school, at no additional cost to the students.

Raimondo says skills development and college affordability are at the core of making Rhode Island a place of opportunity.       

She says helping students is one of the best investments the state can make.
