An 89-year-old World War II veteran from Cranston finally gets the medals he earned fighting the Nazis in France.

Alfred Bettencourt was just 18 years old when he was wounded in combat in France back in 1944.

Senator Reed handed out six honors to Bettencourt, including the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart during a ceremony at the Morgan Health Center today in Johnston.

Bettencourt never received the medals because his military records were destroyed in a fire back in 1973.
