Federal housing audit raps Rhode Island over use of money

By The Associated Press
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ An audit report says Rhode Island failed to properly administer federal housing money and that federal officials have no assurance that more than $6.3 million was efficiently used.
The inspector general of the Department of Housing and Urban Development recommends that the state repay more than $1.4 million.
The audit found inadequate record-keeping and use of federal money for rehabilitation costs far greater than the market value. It also said state officials did not properly select applicants.
Michael V. Milito, deputy assistant director of Rhode Island Housing, said the agency will address concerns and provide documentation.
The audit recommends that more than $1.4 million be repaid and seeks documentation.
Michael Tondra, chief of the state’s Office of Housing and Community Development, partly blamed staff turnover for limited reviews.
