Hearing about future of state’s central landfill canceled

By The Associated Press
Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp. Executive Director Michael OConnell says the state should promote recycling and divert as much trash as possible from the landfill to extend its life.
He says replacing it would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
OConnell was scheduled to discuss the landfill’s future with lawmakers Wednesday afternoon. The hearing was canceled. A new date hasn’t been set.
OConnell says the corporation needs additional funds for infrastructure and educational programs.
He says it may have to raise the per ton disposal fee or implement a “pay-as-you-throw” system, where residents pay for waste collection based on the amount they generate.
