Inmate released from ACI by mistake turns himself in

UPDATE: The RI Department of Corrections (RIDOC) has confirmed that an inmate that was released by mistake from the ACI Friday afternoon has turned himself in after a statewide search.
Susan Lamkins, spokesperson for the RIDOC, says that 46-year-old Allan Ferreira had returned from a court appearance and was erroneously released around 4 p.m. Friday. Ferreira had just been sentenced to another year behind bars, according to Lamkins, but prison workers didn’t realize the change.

Upon learning of the error made, the Department of Corrections immediately notified Rhode Island State Police (RISP), the RISP Task Force, Cranston Police, and Woonsocket Police for victim notification.

“Given Mr. Ferreira’s criminal history we are certainly glad he chose to do the right thing and turn himself in” said Lamkins.
An extensive internal investigation is underway to determine how the error occurred as well as how to prevent this from happening again.
