A member of the Fairhaven Housing Authority and Fairhaven Conservation Committee is in fair condition at RI Hospital after being attacked with a shovel.

The 48-year-old man told police a man walked up and started beating him many times until the handle of his shovel broke off.

The incident happened Tuesday night on Oxford Street.

Police say the victim was shoveling snow when the attacker walked up, carrying a metal spade, and asked the man if he needed help. When the victim declined, the suspect hit him about ten times.

It is unclear what the motive was and the victim tells police he had never seen him before.

Police are looking for the suspect, who is described as a white male between 25 and 30 years of age, with dark hair and dark eyes and a faint mustache.  The suspect was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, possibly with a North Face insignia on it.

The suspect ran off after the attack and the victim was sent to St. Luke’s Hospital and then Rhode Island Hospital, where he was last listed in fair condition.

Anyone with any information about this attack is asked to call Fairhaven Police Detectives at 508-997-7421.
