Feast of the Blessed Sacrament organizers say security is crucial

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The Feast of the Blessed Sacrament is about to begin its 105th year celebrating Portuguese culture.

What’s kept it going this long?

“We’re fortunate enough to have been support us through the years,” said Feast President Carlos Nunes. “The membership, the volunteers, each year’s feast committee. We do an outstanding job of putting stuff together, and it’s getting bigger and bigger.”

Organizers expect tens of thousands over the four-day event.

But more people means more safety concerns.

The recent shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California is a reminder of the importance of tight security.

“Barricades at every approaching street,” said New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell. “You’ll see a very significant police presence. There are a number of other things that we prepare for that we don’t talk about publicly, but rest assured we’re thinking about things that haven’t been done, and putting in steps to counter them.”

Organizers say safety is their number one priority and are asking people to be aware of their surroundings, and not to bring any backpacks or coolers.

They’re also asking people to simply relax and enjoy music, Portuguese cuisine and everything that makes the festival special.

“They have a great entertainment schedule,” said Mike Canasta of Club S.S. Sacramento, a festival organizer. “And weather looks like it’s going to be perfect for the Feast.”

There are also some street closures for security.

There will be a ban on driving and parking cars on Madeira Avenue from Tinkham Street to Earl Street.
