UPDATE: Surveillance images of the male suspect who vandalized the Islamic School of Rhode Island have been released on RI’s Most Wanted website.
The surveillance shows that the suspect is wearing a hooded sweatshirt, possibly gray, and the hood and shoulders have the appearance of being wet with melted snow from being outside while committing the act during a snowstorm.
The FBI is now involved in the investigation.
The West Warwick school was hit by a vandal two weeks ago.
Someone tagged the doors and walls in bright orange spray paint. The hurtful words were discovered Sunday morning by school leaders. They include mention of a ‘hate crime’.
“This is gut–wrenching to even us. You know, we’re parents, and I understand that people have their opinions. But it’s a school with innocent kids. You know, it’s a good thing this is February vacation coming up because there is a lot of evidence here that police need to look at,” said Hilmy Bakri, president of the board of trustees for the school.
He did not comment on why he thought this may have happened.
The school does have a security system and cameras on the property.
