An investigation is underway in Attleboro after a teenager drowned in a pool Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. at an indoor swimming pool at an apartment complex on Commonwealth Avenue,

According to the Bristol District Attorney’s Office, 17-year-old Ibrahim Iqbal, of Brooklyn, NY, was visiting relatives at the complex and was accompanied at the pool area by his cousin, who was not swimming.

The DA’s office says Iqbal was swimming laps in the pool then began swimming to the bottom of the nine foot deep end of the pool, touching the bottom, and coming back up for air. He did that several times. During one of those trips he did not comeback up for air.

His cousin yelled for help and a member of management staff and another resident pulled him from the pool and began CPR. He was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The DA’s office says the death appears to be accidental but they continue to investigate.
