The punishment handed down to a troubled Brown University fraternity has been lessened.

After an independent review the sanctions imposed on Phi Kappa Psi, including loss of University recognition and housing, will remain, but the length of time has been reduced from four years to two and a half.

Last fall the University dropped the hammer on two frats that created an unsafe environment during parties with alcohol.

In at least one case, a drink had contained a date rape drug, leading to the rape of a student.
