How to Make Money as a “Movie Extra!”

“You ought to be in pictures!” says the old song!

Yes, you ought to be in pictures, and you can be.

See, the ringside crowd in the movie, “Bleed for This” filmed in Rhode Island.

These are regular folks – like you and me – working as “movie extras”

The same is true for all those Scouts you saw in the Oscar nominated, “Moonrise Kingdom,” all shot here in Rhode Island.

“It’s not as hard as you would think,” says Annie Mulhall, of LDI Casting based in Warwick. www.LDIpro.com.

Ann Mulhall of LDI casting in Warwick says getting extra work is pretty simple.

“We have a website, and people can go onto the website and upload a photo so we have that as our data base,” Mulhall said.

“And if they fit the criteria, and they are available on the day they need them, it’s pretty much how it works,” added Mulhall.

Bottom line: you don’t have to be a trained actor, or have model looks to sign up.

Just, be yourself!

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, “Now if you want to be in pictures, there’s a mountain of opportunity. Look at all the movies at this multiplex. Each probably used dozens, if not hundreds of extras. And hey, if I can do it, you can do it!”

Watch closely in this scene from the movie, “The Makeover.” Yes that’s me back in the crowd applauding.

And, here I am with actress Kate Winslet in a scene from the movie “Labor Day.”

More recently I’m with boxer Vinny Paz on the movie set of his life story, “Bleed for This!”

I was also in three episodes of the ABC show, “Body of Proof,” all filmed in Providence.

“I found out I really loved it. So as far as starting as an extra, that’s where it all began for me,” said local actor Billy “V” Vigeant.

I met Rhode Island actor Billy Vee on the set of “Body of Proof” but boy has his career taken off. He’s now had featured roles in big movies, with actors Denzel Washington, Harvey Keitel and Christian Bale.

“And then when you graduate, to doing ‘day–player’ and principle roles, it’s like you made the major leagues….”

“And now it’s show time. As far as, fortunately I’ve been very, very lucky and like I said, I’ve worked with some of the biggest actors in the world,” said actor Billy “V” Vigeant.

Of course not every extra aspires to be a star like Billy;  most do it just for a few extra bucks and some fun!

“It was a blast. It was a great time,” sat Steve Feinberg.

Even the Executive Director of Rhode Island‘s Film and TV office took a vacation day, so he could be an extra on “Bleed for This!”

“I have to pretend in my mind, that I am Vinny’s best friend, that I am going to make it happen; that I’m rooting him on and everything is real. And that is where my mind is, until he says ‘cut!'” RI Film & TV Director Feinberg said.

So sign up! Then it’s lights… camera…and action, and you’re a movie extra, too!

“You ought to be in pictures…my star of stars!” says the famous movie song!
