3 minority police officers in Providence sue to stop exam

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Three minority police officers in Providence say the department does not promote officers fairly and they’re suing to stop an upcoming exam.
Detectives Anthony Roberson and Kenneth Court and Patrolman Fausto Garcia are seeking a preliminary court injunction to stop the Feb. 28 sergeant promotional exam.
The lawsuit was transferred Thursday to U.S. District Court.
The officers allege that fewer minorities are promoted because of the examination practices, and that the exam would further inhibit minority advancement in the department. They say fewer minorities are taking the test to get promoted because of the disparate effect of the examinations.
A police department spokeswoman said on Friday that she had no comment on the lawsuit.
