PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Brown University has been awarded a $2.5 million, five-year grant for a new center for physical therapy research.

The university says the Foundation for Physical Therapy awarded it the grant for a center of excellence to spur research in the field.

In the new Center on Health Services Training and Research, Brown, Boston University and the University of Pittsburgh will train researchers and produce new studies to improve how care is delivered.

The center’s director, Linda Resnik, says there have been few physical therapist researchers with the skills to conduct health services research. She says the field lacks the kind of evidence it needs to inform improvements in health service delivery and policy.

The research will focus on measuring rehabilitation outcomes, implementing science and quality assurance and analyzing large datasets.
