Suspect in fatal New Bedford hit-and-run held without bail

No bail for the driver accused in a deadly hit and run in New Bedford back in March that killed a 68 year-old woman.

James Bennett-Werra, 21, was arraigned on seven charges Monday in Fall River Superior Court and pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Prosecutors said Fairhaven Police tried pulling over Bennett-Werra, who identifies as a female and goes by the name Jannaya Love, for a parole violation after she cut off her GPS monitoring device.

She booked it to New Bedford and was allegedly speeding down Tallman Street when she hit a Toyota Corolla, killing 68-year-old Janet Murphy, and sent Murphy’s son to the hospital.

Witnesses at the time said an officer was on the scene tending to victims, and that’s when Bennett-Werra ran off. She was later arrested.

In court Monday, a judge ordered the 21-year-old to be held without bail.

She’s due back in court in October.
