Yale Blanks Brown Hockey At Meehan Auditorium

Brown University Press Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Yale’s Rob O’Gara scored the lone goal of the game in the second period and Alex Lyon stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Brown men’s hockey team fell to No. 18 Yale, 1-0, in Friday evening’s ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown moves to 4-12 overall and 1-8 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-4-2 on the season and 5-3-1 in conference action.

Sophomore Tyler Steel (Vernon, British Columbia) made a game-high 35 saves for the Bears, his third straight game with at least 35 stops, and allowed just the one power-play goal. Junior Joe Prescott (Norwell, Mass.) paced the Bears with four shots, while rookie defenseman Josh McArdle (Roscoe, Ill.) had three blocked shots.

Brown and Yale went back-and-forth throughout the opening period, but neither squad found the back of the net. Yale had the best opportunity when Mitch Witek was all alone in front and tried a nifty move with eight seconds left on the clock, but Steel was not fooled and turned away the attempt to keep the game scoreless at the first intermission.

Yale took advantage of three power plays in the second period, as O’Gara gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 11:02. Stu Wilson sent a pass through the slot to the left circle, where O’Gara rifled a shot past Steel for the power-play tally to give the visitors the one-goal advantage.

Brown remained on the offensive, however, highlighted at 16:48 when Joey de Concilys (St. Catherine’s, Ontario) sent a pass through the middle of the neutral zone right to Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) for the good look, but Lyon denied the bid to keep the 1-0 advantage after two periods.

After Yale killed off a pair of Brown power plays early in the third stanza, Steel kept the Bears in the game with an impressive glove save with 4:08 left to play. Nevertheless, Yale kept the Bears to without a quality shot late in the period and held on for the one-goal victory.

Brown returns to action tomorrow when the Bears visit Yale at 7 p.m. Brown’s next home game is on Friday, Jan. 30 when they host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men’s hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
