FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) _ Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has declared a state of emergency and banned all non-essential motor vehicle travel during the approaching blizzard.

Baker said Monday the state of emergency is effective immediately and the non-essential travel ban goes into effect at midnight.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says it is prepared with 4,000 road crews at the ready, along with 250,000 tons of salt and 420,000 gallons of de-icing liquid.

Baker earlier strongly urged residents to avoid driving during the storm, warning that conditions could make travel difficult if not impossible, and that public transportation is likely to be affected as well. He says residents should also prepare for the possibility of power outages.

A coastal flood warning has been posted for the early morning hours of Tuesday.
